Types of oil coolers

May 29, 2023

1. Air-cooled oil cooler
The air-cooled oil cooler is much like a small radiator, with its core composed of many cooling pipes and cooling plates, which cool the oil using the upwind of the car during driving. This type of oil cooler has a large heat dissipation capacity and is often used in racing cars and turbocharged cars with high heat loads. However, air-cooled oil coolers require a long warm-up time after the engine starts to reach normal operating temperature, so they are rarely used on ordinary cars.
2. Water-cooled oil cooler
The oil cooler is placed in the cooling water circuit and uses the temperature of the cooling water to control the temperature of the lubricating oil. When the temperature of the lubricating oil is high, it is cooled by cooling water. When the engine starts, it absorbs heat from the cooling water to quickly increase the temperature of the lubricating oil. The oil cooler is composed of a casing made of aluminum alloy, a front cover, a rear cover, and a copper core tube. In order to enhance cooling, a heat sink is installed outside the pipe. Cooling water flows outside the pipe, while lubricating oil flows inside the pipe, exchanging heat between the two. There is also a structure that allows oil to flow outside the pipe while water flows inside the pipe.
According to its classification, it can be divided into 5 categories: but the most common and widely marketed are the first 2 types of oil coolers.
1) Engine oil cooler: cools the lubricating oil of the engine, maintaining a reasonable temperature (90-120 degrees) and viscosity of the oil; The installation position is on the cylinder block of the engine and is integrated with the casing during installation.
2) Transmission oil cooler: Cooling the lubricating oil of the transmission, installed in the water chamber of the engine radiator or on the outside of the gearbox housing. If it is air-cooled, it is installed on the front side of the radiator.
3) Retarder oil cooler: Used to cool the lubricating oil during the operation of the retarder. It is installed on the outside of the gearbox and is mostly a shell and tube type or water oil composite product.
4) Exhaust gas recirculation cooler: It is a device used to cool some of the exhaust gas returned to the engine cylinder, with the aim of reducing the content of nitrogen oxides in car exhaust.
5) Heat dissipation cooler module: It is a device that can simultaneously cool multiple or partial objects such as cooling water, lubricating oil, compressed air, etc. The cooling module adopts a highly integrated design concept and has the characteristics of full functionality, small volume, intelligence, and high efficiency.
